Swallow GB Greenhouses have been established since 2009 and are continually growing their product range. They manufacture quality timber greenhouses and pride themselves with the fact that their greenhouses have no hidden costs because toughenend glass, auto vents, staging etc are included in the basic models of these superior greenhouses.
Some in depth information about the timber they use:
LunaThermo-D, where D stands for durability, comes in a stylish dark brown. The wood's dimensional stability and resistance to decay are significantly improved through the thermal modification process.
LunaThermo-D is thermally modified using higher temperatures (212ºC ±3, decay resistance class 2) and products are suitable for both outdoor and indoor use.
The Thermowood® process
Even the ancient Vikings knew that when building defensive fencing for fortifications, poles made fromwood with a burnt surface were more durable than poles which had not been treated in any way. Studies
on the possible benefits of the thermal modification of wood began as early as the 1930s and 1940s in Europe and the USA, but the manufacturing process never reached an industrial scale. Decades later, VTT (Technical Research Institute of Finland) became interested in the idea and as a result, the ThermoWood® process was patented and the brand was launched in Finland at the end of the 1990s.
The Lunawood® thermal modification process uses only heat (ranging from 190–212ºC) and steam.
Lunawood® end products are completely natural and free from chemical additives.
The ThermoWood® process respects the natural properties of wood. The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties of thewood undergo permanent change. ThermoWood® is a registered trademark and may only be used by member companies of the International ThermoWood Association. Lunawood is one of the association's founding members. The quality of ThermoWood® production is monitored by an independent, external
LunaThermo-D belonging to durability class 2 has a projected service life of 30+ years when resistance to decay is considered (BRE). This applies to exterior cladding and decking applications. However the decking material is subject to surface wear and loading which decreases the reasonable expected service life to 15–20 years.
NON-TOXIC AND CHEMICAL-FREE
Lunawood® Thermowood is a beautiful wood material produced using natural methods. Only heat and steam are used in the manufacturing process and no chemicals are added whatsoever. During the process, steam acts as a protective gas and prevents the wood from splitting and becoming damaged during treatment.
IMPROVED THERMAL INSULATION
Tests have shown that the thermal conductivity of thermowood® is reduced by around 20-25% compared with untreated coniferous wood. As a result, Lunawood® is an excellent choice of material for exteriordoors, cladding, windows and saunas, to name just a few applications.
THERMOWOOD® IS RESIN-FREE
Resin is removed from the wood during the thermal modification process. As a result, the wood does not secrete resin even in high temperatures.
THERMOWOOD® IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR ALLERGY-SUFFERERS
During the production process, organic compounds and emissions which deteriorate the quality of indoor air are removed from the wood. According to research, there are twenty times fewer compounds and emissions in thermowood than in unprocessed pine.
SURFACE TREATMENT OUTDOORS
Lunawood® thermowood should be surface treated before installation or immediately after installation if the beautiful brown colour to be retained. The surface colour can be retained by treating the boards with tinted/pigmented wood oil, wax, wood-protecting stain, varnish or paint, which contains a UV filter. The surface treatment can be applied either before or immediately after installation using only a thin coat. Any excess should be wiped off. However one should always follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines.
The surface treatment should be renewed as necessary. The need for re-treating varies depending on theclimate, amount of usage and the degree of exposure
to UV light. With painted untreated wood the typical interval between maintenance is approximately 5 years. With Lunawood® thermowood the maintenance interval in painting can be greatly extended, possibly three times longer than usual. By using a more stable material considerable costs can be saved in cladding and decking, taking into consideration the entire lifespan of the product.
THE USE OF LUNAWOOD® WITHOUT SURFACE TREATMENT
We recommend using some form of surface treatment to protect Lunawood® from air born impurities. However unfinished thermowood may be used. The brown colour of the surface will simply fade and turn to grey over time due to the influence of UV. The weathered appearance of the wood is elegant and the beneficial properties remain intact. The surface of the wood merely creates a protective layer for itself. The original brown colour can be restored, using an
effective washing solution after which a surface treatment can be applied.
